The Malt Barn Studio

The Malt Barn Studio is an exercise studio situated in the heart of St. Andrews in a quiet courtyard just off South Street. It occupies half of the beautifully refurbished top floor in an historic 200 year old building. We are a group of teachers who come from a wide variety of backgrounds but are united in our belief that the exercise systems we teach (Pilates and Yoga) can be open to all people of different ages and sexes and that the body and mind can be brought back into harmony through developing an awareness and sensitivity from a deeper approach to exercise.

We specialise in small classes with a maximum of 8 or 9 people. This allows for a more careful teaching approach with hands on guidance whenever required, giving clients a more accurate and secure experience. The Malt Barn offers one-to-one Pilates apparatus sessions and is fully equipped with two Reformers, a tower and the Wunda Chair — small group studio equipment classes can also be offered. Pilates on the equipment can facilitate movements that can be hard to reach on the mat and help explore an individualised programme to add challenges to pilates practice. These sessions can be particularly good for clients who have back or joint injuries. Please contact Judy for further details.

Bad Posture is not necessarily an age related problem; it can afflict all of us at various times due to any number of factors; from stress, illness and simply the habits we develop as a consequence of modern life.

We do not represent a ‘quick fix’ approach to exercise, but by participating in any of the practices we offer, you will be taking up a more holistic approach. In time you will gain improved balance, a greater sense of increased space in your joints and more lift in the spine. You will develop better breathing patterns and clear thinking, your gait and stance will acquire ease and grace.

We look forward to seeing you at The Malt Barn Studio.

† This is a class specifically aimed at providing a safe movement and exercise experience for people with Osteoporosis / Osteopenia and some arthritic conditions. It will involve muscle strength and power building to help prevent fracture and weakness. I will help you learn techniques in class that you can apply to your everyday movement to help you reduce pain and become more resilient to further injury. Please ring or email Shelagh to enquire further.

†† Power Pilates is similar to regular Pilates but with longer holds, more controlled movements and some variations on the movements which will bring in hand-held weights, ankle weights, magic circles and other small equipment to increase the intensity of the class. The class will focus on different areas of the body each week (abs, upper body, glutes, legs and hips and also full body). Some pilates experience is recommended to join this class. Please note that this class is shorter (45 minutes) and therefore will cost £10/class if you sign up for the block in advance. Drop-ins can be arranged if space allows at £12/class.

Winter 2026 Bookings

We operate a block-booking system for Pilates which provides continuity and development of the individual in their practice; this is difficult to achieve with an exclusively drop-in approach.

Please contact your teacher directly for class block dates and to book individual sessions or blocks of classes.

£12.00 per class if prepaid as a block, or £14.00 for drop-ins (24hrs notice needed to alert the teacher for a possible drop-in).

We ask that wherever possible you pay direct debit to your teacher unless they prefer a booking through their website, your teacher will advise. If you are unable to attend a class, you may find your teacher is willing to Zoom the class live as they teach in-person attendees.

PLEASE NOTE:

24 hour cancellation notice is required on all one-to-one equipment classes otherwise clients will be required to pay the full fee of £40.

Risk Assessment – to be read by every class member and teacher:

  • Please be on time, and be aware that at times there are classes running in both studios – please be mindful when walking through classes.
  • The windows will be kept open for maximum air flow, obviously as it gets colder it will necessitate wearing layers and warmer clothes. The heating will be put on too.
  • Leave all your coats and shoes in the corridor area but bring in your bags and personal items and leave them on the windowsill or shelves if possible.
  • Sanitised mats and equipment are provided, but clients may bring their own if preferred. Cleaning materials are available and we ask that mats be sprayed down at the end of each class.
  • You will be expected to fill in a new medical form at the beginning of every Autumn term, this can be downloaded from the link above.
